About the role

The City of Sydney is seeking an experienced Claims Specialist to join the Insurance and Claims team. This role is key to managing the portfolio of claims made against the City, aiming to minimise financial, safety, reputational, and legal risks, with a strong focus on ensuring public safety.

What You Will Do:
As a Claims Specialist, you will assess Council’s legal liability in incidents resulting in property damage, personal injury, or financial loss to third parties. This involves close liaison with the City’s insurers and external legal panel.

You will play an integral role in the City’s insurance and risk management program, collaborating with a range of internal teams, external legal providers, expert consultants, insurers, the City’s insurance broker, contractors, and the wider community.

You will manage the full lifecycle of claims—from initial contact and customer liaison to information gathering, enquiries, liability assessment, and quantum evaluation. The role also requires regular engagement with individuals in challenging situations, requiring strong interpersonal and communication skills.

We’re looking for someone with:

•    a degree qualification in law and/or significant relevant work experience in managing public liability, property claims for an insurer, broker or law firm
•    proven ability to work autonomously and to manage a large portfolio of claims
•    excellent interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to de-escalate conflict and to show empathy to people in difficult situations
•    excellent written communication skills
•    sound judgement and highly developed analytical skills.

This is a rewarding role that will contribute positively to the City’s risk management efforts. You’ll work collaboratively with expert and committed teams to achieve meaningful results.
