Expression of Interest – Chairperson – Audit Risk and Improvement Committee

Overview 

Council is seeking expressions of interest for the role of Independent Chair for Council’s Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC).

Through this EOI process, Council is looking to appoint a suitably qualified candidate with appropriate skills and experience for the role, with an appointment term of up to four (4) years. The Committee are offered staggered term of between one (1) to four (4) years to ensure continuity of knowledge, skills and experience and avoiding all members finishing their term at the same time.

The Committee membership comprises of three independent external members. The independent members of the Committee, taken collectively, will have a broad range of personal attributes, and professional skills and experience relevant to the operations of Council.

The chair will be required to have strong leadership qualities, be able to lead effective committee meetings and maintain effective working relationships with the ARIC and Council. The Chair is required to lead the Committee’s 4-year Strategic Work Plan, its annual Operational Plan and annual reporting process whilst working closely with Council to further improve its internal audit processes.

The following criteria will be used when assessing applications:

  • Independence from Council and its staff;
  • Relevant professional qualifications and/or significant experience in one or more of the following areas: business administration, risk management, assurance, financial management or law;
  • Understanding of and/or experience in the local government sector;
  • Understanding of the role of corporate governance in organisations;
  • Relevant experience on similar committees in the local government, broader public or private sectors.
  • Ability to attend one meeting per annum in person, at Council’s Administration Office in Casino.

The committee meet on a quarterly basis, with the standard duration for a meeting being two (2) hours. Meetings are held via MS Teams commencing at 4pm on a weekday. An additional meeting is held to review and endorse the annual audited financial reports and if necessary other time critical reports. Meeting preparation will involve review and critical analysis of the Committee business papers and discussion with other Committee members and relevant Council staff.

Remuneration for the chairperson of the ARIC is $1,282.35 (exc GST) per meeting, plus superannuation at 11.5%. This rate is inclusive of time spent on preparation for the meeting, travel time and travel expenses.

PLEASE NOTE

  • A police check will be undertaken before an appointment is made.
  • Council will appoint the Chair after consideration of a report and recommendation by the selection committee, following assessment of applications.
  • Members of the Audit Risk and Improvement Committee are subject to the Council’s Code of Conduct and the ARIC Terms of Reference.
