We are seeking a motivated and suitably experienced individual to join our Sustainable Environments team as Coordinator Environment and Sustainability in a Permanent Full-Time capacity.
Located within two hours south-west of Melbourne, Colac Otway is renowned for its magnificent southern coastline, the Otway rainforests and the northern lakes and offers an attractive lifestyle with diverse employment opportunities. This position is based in Colac.
This is a leadership position that will ensure that Council:
- Delivers programs and strategies that pursue Colac Otway Shire’s environmental and sustainability objectives to create a more environmentally healthy, sustainable and climate resilient Shire.
- Achieves compliance with its environmental responsibilities and advances action to proactively minimise carbon emissions and mitigate against future climate change impacts.
- Develops and maintains strong partnerships with government agencies, stakeholders and community groups to advance environmental and sustainability outcomes.
- Meets its environmental obligations to rehabilitate and care for closed landfills in accordance with the relevant legislation and regulations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Oversee the effective delivery of Council’s environment and sustainability programs and projects.
- Contribute to the development of policy where appropriate in relation to environmental and sustainability matters to deliver environmentally sustainable and climate safe services, operations and outcomes.
- Coordinate the implementation of strategies and actions outlined in Council’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy and Climate Change Action Plan and lead organisational efforts to reduce Council’s carbon emissions and adapt to climate change.
- Coordinate Council’s rehabilitation, after care management, monitoring and reporting responsibilities for closed landfills.
- Ensure Council’s obligations are met for rehabilitation and after care management of closed landfills.
About You:
To support your success in this role you will have:
- Degree in Environmental Science/Sustainability or Natural Resource Management or similar environmental management equivalent experience.
- Substantial professional experience (minimum 5 years) in the fields of environmental sustainability, natural resource management, climate change mitigation/adaptation, landfill rehabilitation or related field.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise staff, communicate effectively, establish and maintain networks and gain cooperation and assistance from clients and staff.
- Understanding of Planning and Environmental legislation, policies, processes and procedures for clearing of native vegetation and timber harvesting on private land.
- Demonstrated ability to manage large and/or complex environmental projects with multiple stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare reports and interpret environmental information.
- Demonstrated record of writing successful grant applications and effective management of the associated grant requirements.
- Current Victorian drivers licence.

Salary information: $96,918.12 to $107,051.36 per annum plus superannuation.
