About Us

Bellingen Shire is a picturesque and diverse area located on the Mid North Coast of NSW halfway between Sydney and Brisbane and just south of Coffs Harbour.  It has a total area of 1,605 square kilometres with a coastline of approximately 10km.  The region is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, including lush rainforests, pristine rivers, and the World Heritage-listed Dorrigo National Park.  The area is known for its diverse ecosystems, abundant wildlife, and charming towns, cafes and artisan shops.

Bellingen Shire’s natural beauty, cultural richness, and welcoming community make it a unique and attractive destination for both residents and visitors, with its emphasis on sustainability and preserving the environment adding to its appeal.

We are a progressive local government authority employing approximately 150 dedicated employees.

The Opportunity

Are you ready to make a difference in your community? As our Land Use Compliance Officer, you’ll report to the Group Leader Development and Compliance. In this role, you’ll be responsible for investigating complaints about development, building, land use, and environmental issues. Collaborating with a team of professionals including town planners and environmental health officers, you’ll ensure a safe, sustainable environment by promoting compliance and finding practical solutions.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need tertiary qualifications in Environmental Health, Building Surveying, Town Planning, Environmental Science, or relevant experience in compliance or regulatory services. While not essential, additional qualifications such as a Diploma of Government (Investigation) or a Certificate IV in Local Government (Regulatory Services) would be highly regarded.

What will set you apart is your ability to navigate complex investigations, build strong relationships, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders. If you have experience in court proceedings, report writing, or a solid understanding of legislation like the Local Government Act or Protection of the Environment Operations Act, you’ll thrive in this role. Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills are essential to success.
