We have over 163 parks, 78 playgrounds, 384 hectares of open space, and 80+ hectares of sporting ovals including Maitland Regional Sportsground which is an icon for the city and has a rich history in our community spanning over 80 years, as well as being the training ground for the Newcastle Jets A league teams

About the Role
Maitland City Council's Pathways program is a fantastic way to kick-start your career and gain professional experience in local government! Commencing in 2024, for a period of 4 years we are looking for an Apprentice Parks & Gardens and an Apprentice Sports Turf Management to join our team!

We are seeking applications from candidates who are highly motivated to continue on their learning and development journey, whilst obtaining solid experience within local government.

By working within a supportive environment, you will gain experience in a broad range of areas including but not limited to gardening, greenkeeping, turf maintenance and landscaping services. You will maintain sporting, leisure and open space areas which will improve the overall appearance of the city. Types of tasks you will complete will include:

  • Planting out and maintaining gardens, maintenance of turf areas, weed control & general horticultural duties
  • Operating plant and equipment (for example zero turn mowers, tractors and horticultural power tools.

You will continue your studies in a Certificate III in Parks and Gardens or a Certificate III Sports Turf Management by attending TAFE one day per week whilst developing knowledge, skills and abilities via on the job training.

Benefits
This is a temporary full-time role working 38 hours per week with a base salary starting from $687 per week + 11.5% p.a. superannuation + allowances.

About You
To be successful in the role you will possess the following:

  • Eligibility to complete Certificate III in Parks and Gardens or Sports Turf Management (please read role charter to make sure you are eligible before applying)
  • Provisional or Class C Drivers Licence by the commencement of employment
  • Interest and aptitude in gardening and landscaping
  • Good communication, literacy and numeracy skills
  • Proven ability to work productively as a member of a team and contribute to team goals
  • Hold a WHS General Construction Induction Card (White Card) or willingness to obtain prior to commencement
