About the role
Reporting to the Civil Works Engineer, this is a key role in the planning, coordination, and execution of civil construction, maintenance, and capital works programs and projects. It plays a critical role in ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality infrastructure that meets community needs and aligns with Council’s strategic objectives, operational plans, and budget. This position requires strong leadership, project management expertise, and the ability to collaborate with internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders to drive efficient and effective project outcomes across the northern part of our region.
About you
You will be an experienced leader with a background in civil works and civil construction with proven ability to plan, coordinate, and manage works and resources across civil crews.
You will be a strong communicator, with ability to work collaboratively with relevant stakeholders at both strategic and operational levels.
Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Develop, maintain, and oversee construction and maintenance programs to meet quality standards
- Provide leadership and clear direction to teams, ensuring effective execution of tasks, budget control, and service delivery
- Engage and coach staff to enhance skills, achieve strategic goals, and foster a culture of continuous improvement
- Lead the implementation of safety management practices within the workgroup
- Ensure all works by staff and contractors are conducted safely, meet standards, and minimize disruption
- Plan and improve construction and maintenance projects and delivery methods
- Complete planning and reporting for civil projects on time and keep stakeholders informed
- Monitor and manage expenditure to ensure budget compliance, reporting significant variances
- Participate in an after-hours roster for emergencies and urgent situations
- Maintain accountability for information systems and ensure compliance with record-keeping requirements
- Assist in procurement, ensuring materials and resources meet economic and quality standards
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Tertiary qualifications in civil engineering or other appropriate discipline with substantial experience in managing a civil works service area and day-labour operation
- Certificate IV in Civil Construction Supervision is desirable
- Work Safe in the Construction Industry Induction Certificate (White Card)
- Current unrestricted “C” Class drivers’ licence
- Demonstrated absence of a relevant criminal history, (National Police Check)
