How you’ll make a difference

Victoria Daly Regional Council is looking for a full-time Director of Community Development based in Katherine, NT. 

As part of the Executive team, the Director of Community Development is responsible for the leadership, management, development and growth of a range of funded community programs which supports improving the livability and wellbeing of our constituents in our communities across Victoria Daly Regional Council

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide strategic advice and support to the Chief Executive and Council on the delivery of Community Services programs.
  • Manage and implement all Community Services programs within the Community Services and Community Safety and Wellbeing area's according to the funding body's requirements. 
  • Develop and implement strategic and operational plans for Community Services and programs responding to the priorities outlined in the councils Regional Plan
  • Develop the Community Services programs within our Council through identifying and developing new funding streams to expand services that will enhance the livability of our communities and our regional lifestyle. 
  • Ensure the maintenance of good standards of communication with all appropriate agencies of government in pursuit of Council’s decisions and policies.
  • Ensure that all relevant proposals or decisions of governments and their agencies affecting the areas of community services are monitored and appropriate action taken and information provided to the CEO and Council.
  • Manage risk, budget and resources associated with the Community Development directorate, ensuring relevant grants and subsidies are applied for, managed and acquitted.
  • Provide program reports to the CEO, Council and other stakeholders when required.
  • Manage and oversee the auditing of programs service delivery, standards and implement improvement plans where necessary.

As the Victoria Daly region has a large Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, you will need to ensure cultural sensitivity and awareness across all activities.

Additionally, you will join with the following skills and background:

  • Demonstrated experience in Senior Management roles relating to Community Services or similar.
  • Demonstrated commercial and financial acumen and understanding of financial budgeting and reporting associated with managing expenditure and delivering outcomes in accordance with approved budgets to achieve maximum benefit from all recourses.
  • Proven ability to provide support, development, programming, advice and training for community development initiatives.
  • Ability to understand, appreciate and respect cultural differences and culturally based aspirations in developing and implementing community programs and services.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively developing and maintaining strategic relationships with stakeholders, including all levels of local government, other levels of government and the community.
  • Previous experience in working with Indigenous people or in situations requiring sensitivity to cultural differences.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a diverse team and contribute to an innovative and positive working environment that motivates and supports people to achieve high levels of performance.
  • Sound knowledge of the principles of Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Public Health, social planning, Community Services or similar (desirable).
  • Extensive experience in managing Community Service programs (essential).
