Georges River Council has a significant opportunity for a Financial Accountant to join the Financial Management team, based in Hurstville.
About The Role
As the Financial Accountant, you will report directly to the Head of Financial Management and work as part of the Financial Management team to ensure the application of sound financial management principles and the transparent reporting of Council’s financial performance. You will ensure consistent and efficient undertaking of Council’s receipting and banking processes, while contributing to the wider financial control environment.
This role sits within our Finance team which works to contribute to the achievement of Council's vision and corporate goals through a range of finance and accounting related services including transactional accounting, business support, project accounting and strategic financial planning. The team is committed to providing high quality service to all stakeholders, including our Executive Team, Councillors, all council staff and the community.
What We Offer
- One Permanent, full-time role - 70 hours per fortnight
- Salary from $81,546.21 - $94,483.59 per annum plus 11.5% superannuation dependent on the skills, qualifications and relevant experience of the suitable candidate

Key Accountabilities
- Conduct financial activities and reporting in compliance with legislation, policies, procedures, and standards
- Complete reconciliations for general ledger accounts and resolve discrepancies before month-end close
- Track and reconcile the grants register, ensuring compliance with grant terms and accurate income recognition
- Assist with monthly review of capital project expenditure and monitoring of Work in Progress (WIP) balances
- Assist with monthly and annual accounting of Fixed Assets, including capitalisation, depreciation, and disposals
- Provide backup for key transactional finance functions and assist in the preparation of financial statements and reports
- Provide advice and recommendations to relevant staff in a timely manner
- Undertake audit activities and assist in the development and implementation of finance department policies
The successful candidate will have
- Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Business, Commerce, or other related discipline
- Previous experience in an assistant accountant or financial accountant role
- Demonstrated ability to function with minimal supervision and effective time management skills with the ability to organise own work and to establish priorities and meet performance requirements
- Demonstrated ability to deliver financial activities and reporting in compliance with relevant statutory bodies, standards, and legislation
- Experience managing grants, including the recognition of grant income and expenditure in accordance with relevant accounting standards (AASB 1058, AASB 15)
- Experience with asset accounting, including asset management, capitalisation, depreciation, and reporting in line with AASB standards
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to clearly explain accounting issues
- Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and Word
- Commitment to professional development, including keeping up to date with relevant legislation, requirements of the Office of Local Government and policies and procedures
Desirable
- CA/CPA qualified/part qualified
- Previous experience in the use of Technology One Finance system
