Your Position:

Are you curious, attentive to details and keen to learn new software applications? Do you want to become a 'governance guru'?

Council is looking for a Governance Officer who is good with wrangling information and has a flair for secretariat support. Our two Governance Officers support a range of civic and corporate governance functions, deliver access to information services to the public, and undertake administrative and project work to support the team and to support business improvements and good governance right across the organisation.

Note that providing secretariat support will require attendance at meetings outside of conventional business hours and this is managed by taking advantage of Council's flexi time arrangements.

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Preparing business papers and supporting meetings of Council, including 'live minuting' at Council meetings
  • Maintaining and publishing a range of registers and other civic and corporate governance records
  • Processing applications under the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (the GIPA Act) and handling related reports and publication activities
  • Processing subpoenas and notices for the production of information
  • Providing secretariat and administrative support for the Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC) and the Internal Audit Program
  • Maintaining Council's business paper production system and supporting the users of that system
  • Undertaking a range of administrative tasks and projects to support the Governance & Risk team and to contribute to the business improvement initiatives of the team.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Completed or be nearing completion of a relevant tertiary qualification at a diploma level or higher, or demonstrated work experience and knowledge at this level.
  • Well-developed computer and keyboarding skills and an ability to master new business information systems
  • An ability to interrogate digital and paper records systems to identify and assess information
  • An ability to guide others in business/governance procedures and computer applications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated high-level interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Well-developed time management and organisational skills
  • Excellent analytical, problem identification and resolution skills

Additionally, you will bring to this role the following:

  • An ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality and to represent the image of the Council in a positive and professional manner
  • Availability to work out of hours to support Council and ARIC meetings
  • The ability to work collaboratively in a small team
  • Local government experience in NSW, or demonstrable knowledge of local government, is desirable, but not essential
  • An ability to interpret legislation such as the Local Government Act 1993 

Key Requirements:
