About the role

Wollongong City Libraries (WCL) is a dynamic service of Wollongong City Council. You will play a core role in delivering on Council's commitment to creating a community that is informed, engaged, creative and connected. You will support the creation of an Extraordinary Wollongong by delivering high quality services across WCL locations and functional areas. This includes providing direct customer service, supporting programs and services in areas such as local studies; home library; digital services; collections; adult, children and youth programs; programs and services for members of our culturally and linguistically diverse community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Current available positions:

  • 1 x 35 hours Permanent Full-Time Corrimal Library
  • 1 x 15 hours Permanent Part-Time Helensburgh Library (Hours: Monday 10am-2pm, Tuesday 10am-1pm, Wednesday 10am-2pm and Friday 9am-1pm)
  • 1 x 23 hours Permanent Part-Time Unanderra and/or Dapto Library (Hours: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 930am-5pm, Friday 930am-1pm or 130pm-5pm)
  • 1 x 15 hours Permanent Part-Time Wollongong Library (Hours: Nightshift Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 5pm-830pm and Wednesday 4pm-830pm)
  • 1 x 13 hours Permanent Part-Time Wollongong Library (Hours may vary depending on operational requirements: Monday, Tuesday 4 hours per day and Wednesdays 5 hours per day)

Weekend and evening work will be required. Salary from $41.08 up to $46.00 per hour, plus superannuation. (Salary package will be assessed based on skills, experience and qualifications). These positions are initially based at these libraries; however, you may be required to work across any of our seven libraries across the Wollongong Local Government Area, dependent on operational requirements. Applicants should be suitably fit to undertake the duties as outlined in the job description.

Under Part 2, Section 6 of the Child Protection (Working With Children) Act 2012, this position has been designated as requiring a paid Working With Children Check.

What you will be doing

You will work collaboratively, build networks and relationships across all teams and sites as well as with the community. You may be required to work across any of our seven libraries across the Wollongong Local Government Area, dependent on operational requirements

You will be responsible for implementing Library policies and procedures and promoting diversity, inclusion and belonging for all library customers including:

  • Providing a proactive and customer-focused approach to library service delivery
  • Collaborating with library staff in the promotion and delivery of library programs, events and services.
  • Collection maintenance and development
  • Assisting customers in the use of technology and equipment
  • Assisting in the implementation of the Library Strategy Wollongong-City-Libraries-Strategy-2024-2028.pdf (nsw.gov.au)

About you

Library Service Officers love engaging with the community and have a strong customer focus. Working in a library is a rewarding experience, where your enthusiastic, proactive, innovative and committed nature to a busy and ever-changing environment will thrive. You will need to possess skills and experience working in a library setting with a relevant diploma or higher-level qualification. Excellent interpersonal, customer service and verbal communication skills are important skills to possess, as well as digital literacy and experience in the digital environment. Your ability to efficiently manage time and apply organisational skills which allows you to prioritise tasks in a busy customer service environment will assist in ensuring a productive work environment. A current Working with Children Check is required in this role.
