We are on the hunt for our next Manager Parks & Environment to lead the delivery of our essential public open space, urban greening and parkland redevelopment services for our welcoming and thriving City.

About the role and your team

  • You will lead 3 teams (comprised of approximately 90 people) in the management, maintenance and enhancement of streetscapes, parks, gardens, natural areas, sports grounds and playgrounds.
  • With an annual budget in excess of $30M, you will lead the delivery of day-to-day care for our natural environment and the delivery of significant projects as diverse as:
    • Kent Street Weir Precinct Plan
    • Queens Park Open Space
    • Bentley Redevelopment space
    • Metronet related projects
  • The key strategies you will lead include the Urban Forest, Local Biodiversity, Public Open Space strategies and our Asset Renewal Program with a specific focus on playgrounds and irrigation infrastructure.
  • An added bonus for the successful applicant is that the City of Canning is situated on the beautiful Djalgarro Beelier (Canning River) and, as a riverine City, this adds an extra element of urban environment that we respectfully care for.

What you will need to succeed

  • Your primary focus and commitment will be ensuring that your team members go home safely every day.
  • Have extensive experience and a personal passion for connecting communities through public open space and associated infrastructure provision.
  • Understand the importance and value of trees and streetscapes in the public realm.
  • Be clear in setting expectations and measures of success.
  • Have experience in leading a number of teams as they deliver day to day services.
  • Be a leader of people; your personal values with align with he City’s values of Respect, Working Together and Inclusive.
  • You lead through actions; you will follow through and do what you say you will do.

Snapshot of the role

A typical month will see you:

  • Work with stakeholders within the City and with external stakeholders to prepare for the handover of public open space from Metronet projects to identify how to make best use of this new open space for residents and visitors.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and development to the leaders who report to you.
  • Spend some time listening to your teams and acknowledging their success in delivering Service Plan outcomes.
  • Seeking and instilling in your teams ideas that will improve service delivery and their employee experience.
  • Spend some time listening to local environmental and resident groups.
  • Meet with your colleague Managers to share information, solve problems and share your perspective.
  • Meet with your Director to work through progress toward key strategic goals.
  • Break out the BBQ apron for a staff get together!
