Description
The City of Canning is on the lookout for our next Service Lead Parks. We have over 450 hectares of public parklands and reserves which are a feature and the foundations of our welcoming and thriving City. We take great pride in delivering these spaces for our community; be it for organised sport, passive recreation or to simply just be amongst the natural environs along the Canning River.
What we need is someone to come on board and move our parks teams forward, set operational standards, drive efficiencies and continue the excellent work they do in providing public open space of the highest quality.
About the role and your team
- You will lead teams (comprised of approximately 50 people) across active spaces, passive spaces, irrigation and conservation areas.
- Preserving, maintaining and enhancing the City’s natural areas and parkland is a key function of your service area.
- You will be responsible for the quality and presentation of our sportsgrounds and associated parks facilities.
- Each year you will deliver the Parks Asset renewal program.
- Your teams will be responsible for the City’s Local Biodiversity Strategy, and will assist in the delivery of our Urban Forest Strategy.
What you will need to succeed
- Your primary focus and commitment will be ensuring that your team members go home safely every day.
- You will be able to bring your multi-disciplinary teams together and ultimately be able to balance competing demands.
- You will be a connector of people and you will do this fairly.
- You will possess the tact and experience required to be the conduit between the Community, your teams and other business areas within the City and you understand the nuances required in an environment such as this.
- You will be confident in leading, managing and delivering on documented service levels within endorsed and established budgets consistently.
- Extensive experience and a personal passion for parks and parkland management.
- Be clear in setting expectations and measures of success.
- Have experience in leading a number of teams as they deliver day to day services.
- Be a leader of people; your personal values with align with the City’s values of Respect, Working Together and Inclusive.
- You lead through actions; you will follow through and do what you say you will do.

Snapshot of the role
A typical month will see you:
- Provide leadership, guidance and development to those who work with you.
- Spend some time listening to your teams and acknowledging their success in delivering Service Plan outcomes.
- Seeking and instilling in your teams ideas that will improve service delivery and their employee experience.
- Meet with your colleagues to share information, solve problems and share your perspective.
- Meet with your Manager and Director to work through progress toward key strategic goals.
- Break out the BBQ apron for a staff get together!
