If you’re looking to develop a career in Work Health and Safety (WHS), enjoy working with people, and are a motivated and eager learner, then we want you! This entry-level Trainee WHS Officer role offers you the unique opportunity to receive on-the-job training and mentorship, working alongside Council’s WHS Advisor. You will gain practical skills in WHS legislation, systems, and reporting while supporting a proactive safety culture in a local government setting.
In this role, you will assist with the implementation and maintenance of Council’s WHS Management System, help coordinate risk assessments, workplace inspections, and incident investigations, and contribute to the preparation and review of WHS policies and procedures. You’ll also be involved in organizing WHS training sessions, supporting safety campaigns, and participating in WHS Committee meetings. As you gain experience, you'll increasingly take on more responsibility, contributing to a safer and healthier workplace for all. Plus, you will undertake formal study towards a Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety as part of the traineeship.
We’re looking for someone who has completed Year 12 (or equivalent) or has at least two years in the workforce, with good communication and computer skills. If you’re organized, detail-oriented, and have a positive attitude, this is the perfect role for you to learn and grow. A Class C driver’s licence is required, and if you have a WHS whitecard, it’s a bonus!

This position is located in the beautiful town of Coonabarabran, known as the Astronomy Capital of Australia, which is midway between Melbourne and Brisbane and is known for its beautiful landscape and stunning night skies. The town has medical services, excellent schools, a variety of sporting and social clubs and a thriving tourism Industry. With the nearby Warrumbungle National Park, which is also Australia’s first Dark Sky Park, there is plenty to do and explore whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation.
Selection criteria include:
- A genuine interest in pursuing a career in Work Health and Safety.
- Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent) or Year 10 plus at least two years in the workforce
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with a friendly and approachable manner.
- Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Willingness and ability to undertake formal WHS study as part of a traineeship (Certificate IV in WHS).
- Sound organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work as part of a team and follow instructions.
- Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality and professional conduct.
- Class C driver’s licence (P plates minimum).
It is a plus if you have your WHS whitecard.
